Prenatal DNA Test

A non-invasive prenatal  paternity test is a low risk way to determine paternity before the child is born. Fetal DNA in a pregnant mother’s blood is Moms’ blood sample is tested against the DNA profile of a potential father—his DNA gathered by a simple mouth swab. A prenatal paternity test presents no risk to the child and is reliable as early as seven weeks into pregnancy.

How The Non Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test Works?

Until recently, a pre-birth paternity test was performed using a sample of amniotic fluid. The substance was drawn via a long needle and presented a small  risk to the growth of the child. Non invasive prenatal paternity test uses fetal DNA which is floating around in the bloodstream of the mother.

When you really need to know, there is a simple way to get an answer.

Details About The Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test

  • You must be at least 7 weeks pregnant. A gestation shorter than that is less likely to provide a certain match with the fathers DNA. Nine weeks is better.

  • Results can be available as quickly as one week. Standard turnaround time is 3 weeks

  • Father and mother do not need to be tested at the same time or at the same location.

Why Do We Call This Method Non-Invasive?

As the term suggests, there is no intrusion into the amniotic sac.  Instead, the mother’s blood is tested for fetal DNA. The DNA of the father is simply collected with the help of a cheek swab. A Prenatal DNA Test does not affect the pregnancy in any way and prior pregnancies will not affect the results of noninvasive paternity test. Once a child is delivered, the fetal DNA vanishes from the mother’s bloodstream within hours.
