On probation? Then you may be required to submit to random probation drug testing. Here are a few things you need to know before requesting a probation drug test:

WHAT TYPE OF TEST IS REQUIRED?

Normally you will be told what you need. If not, you’ll need to ask.

When it comes to probation drug testing, requirements vary. Some possible options include 5-Panel, 10-Panel, and Expanded Panel drug tests and/or EtG alcohol tests. Tests may be urine, hair or breath, and are sometimes required to be observed.

FIVE-PANEL DRUG TEST

The most frequently requested probation drug test is the standard five-panel or five-panel with EtG alcohol testing, which detects the use of marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, PCP, and opiates, as well as alcohol.

TEN-PANEL DRUG TEST

A 10-Panel drug test includes the five above, plus methadone, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methaqualone and propoxyphene.

EXPANDED PANEL DRUG TEST

An Expanded Panel includes the 10-Panel drug test, plus some commonly abused synthetic opioids: oxycodone, oxymorphone, hydrocodone and hydromorphone.

EtG ALCOHOL TEST

Many on probation are required to include an EtG alcohol test. An EtG (Ethyl glucuronide) test looks for a metabolite of alcohol, which has an 80-hour look back period in urine.

HAIR FOLLICLE TESTING VS URINE TESTING

Another efficient method of drug screening is hair follicle testing.

Many court systems and employers may opt for a hair follicle test due to its extended detection period. It is capable of detecting habitual and binge drug and alcohol use. Often referred to as “hair follicle testing,” it really is not the follicle that is tested. Hair is not plucked out by the root, but is cut at skin level. As a result, the detection window is about 5 days up to 90 days. The most recent 5 days have not emerged from the skin yet.

The most inexpensive option of the probation drug screening is urine drug testing.

Urine drug testing is the most affordable method of drug screening. Because a determined drug user can cheat the test, probation drug testing requirements often include direct observation, meaning that a same-sex observer goes into the rest room with the donor.
