What is Gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is caused by an infection. It usually infects warm, moist areas of the body like urethra, anus, vagina, eyes, throat and even the female reproductive tract.

It’s a sexually transmitted disease and it passes from person to person through unprotected sex whether it be oral, anal or vaginal sex.

Symptoms of Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea symptoms in men:

Symptoms in men typically begin to show 1 – 3 weeks after transmission. The first sign is usually a burning or painful sensation while urinating.

  • A discharge from the penis

  • Greater frequency of urination

  • A sore throat that won’t go away

  • Fever

  • Pain and swelling in the testicles

  • Redness and swelling at the tip of the penis.

Gonorrhea symptoms in women:

Symptoms in women are often hard to recognize as they can appear like a yeast infection or a bacterial infection. Oftentimes, women can have gonorrhea and have zero symptoms.

  • Sharp pain in the abdomen

  • Fever

  • A sore throat

  • Discharge from the vagina

  • Pain or burning while urinating

  • Heavier periods

  • Pain during intercourse

Testing for Gonorrhea

When testing for gonorrhea, our lab uses the “nucleic acid amplification test.” It is very accurate and it’s FDA approved.

The lab will look for Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria in the urine. At this time, we do not offer throat and anal swabbing. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends annual throat and/or anal swabs if you’re a gay or bisexual man, or you’re transgender who practices oral or anal receptive sex.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea are tested together.

When Should I Get Tested?

We recommend getting tested 2 weeks after you believe you were exposed. Followed up with another test in 6 to 12 weeks to confirm.

If you have been treated for Gonorrhea already, it’s important to be retested in 3 months to be sure of no new infections.

Gonorrhea testing is available only in our Morton Grove clinic and chlamydia and gonorrhea are tested together. You can order a Chlamydia/Gonorrhea test on its own, or as part of one of our STD Panels.

Can Gonorrhea Be Cured?

Yes, with antibiotics gonorrhea can be cured.
