What is Syphilis?
Syphilis results from an infection with the bacterium Treponema pallidum. This disease spreads easily, especially during sexual activity, including oral and anal sex.
Additionally, people can transmit syphilis through prolonged kissing, although this occurs less frequently. Since transmission happens through direct contact with sores, many individuals remain unaware they are infected because the sores often go unnoticed. As a result, they may unknowingly spread the disease to others.
Symptoms of Syphilis
There are 3 distinct phases of syphilis infections. In the early stage, people will develop one or more sores.
The sores are painless small ulcers that occur on the genitals or around the mouth. They usually first appear 10-90 days after exposure.
The secondary stage involves a rosy “copper penny” rash usually on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet.
They may also develop warts in the groin area, white patches inside their mouth, fever and weight loss.
