What is Herpes?

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) affects nearly 65% of Americans and spreads through direct contact. You’ll commonly find it in two forms: Herpes Simplex 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex 2 (HSV-2).

Although both types can infect either the oral or genital areas, here’s an easy distinction—HSV-1 typically appears as cold sores around the mouth, while HSV-2 most often causes infections in the genital region. In fact, experts estimate that over 50 million Americans currently live with a genital herpes infection.

Symptoms of Herpesorks

  • Not everyone will experience symptoms of herpes. Oral herpes can show up as a painful cold sore in or around your mouth.

  • Many people have genital herpes for years without ever having an “outbreak.” An outbreak usually involves burning, itching, painful urination and blisters on the genitals.

  • Without herpes symptoms, the only way to determine whether a person has the virus is through herpes testing.

Testing for Herpes

InOut Labs test for herpes with a simple blood test. The herpes test checks for antibodies that develop to fight the infection.

Since most people are only concerned about herpes simplex 2, that is the test included in our STD Panels. We can test for herpes simplex 1 on request, but most people test positive and in the vast majority of cases it causes undue alarm.

Because the window period for the antibodies to develop after herpes infection can vary greatly, it’s possible to have a false-negative test. If you believe you’ve been infected with herpes, test 3 weeks after exposure and again 3 or even 6 months later to confirm results.

There are approximately 1 million new genital herpes cases reported each year in the USA. Millions more go unreported. This is why it’s highly recommended to wear condoms each time you have sexual intercourse.

Herpes testing is available only in our Morton Grove clinic. You can order a herpes test on its own, or as part of one of our STD Panels.

Can Herpes Be Cured?

At this time, there is no cure for herpes but there are medicines that prevent or shorten your outbreaks making it less likely to pass the infection on to your sex partner.
