This situation can be complicated.

If the employee is not currently working and available to perform safety-sensitive functions, he should not go for testing at this time. Document the reason and select an alternate.

If the individual is driving or available to drive, did the prescribing physician know that he drives for a living? The doctor may decide that he shouldn’t drive while on the pain medication. Alternatively, the doctor may prescribe something different that won’t affect his driving.

If the result comes back positive, the MRO will call him to discuss the result. The driver will be asked to provide the prescription for verification. If the prescription is valid, the MRO will report the result as negative. However, the MRO may attach a safety concern.
