What does a liar look like? And why you should care.

Ryan Braun, Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon, Anthony Weiner, Lance Armstrong, O.J. Simpson, Milli Vanilli, John Edwards, George Ryan, Rod Blagojevich, Pete Rose, David Petraeus … liars all.

And they all look just like us.

“We don’t have a drug problem here.” We hear this all the time. How do you know? Really. Unless you’ve tested all of your employees, and do it regularly and randomly, there is no way to really know.

So what does a substance abuse problem mean to you anyway? It may mean nothing—IF, indeed, you do not have a problem. Some numbers:

8.4% of all full-time workers in the U.S. are illicit drug users. They ARE working somewhere. In some industries (e.g. hospitality and construction), the numbers are double that.

14.8% of the Chicago area population uses illicit drugs.

75% of all illicit drug users are employed. Again, liars ARE working somewhere.

Liars go to great lengths not to be discovered. Drug test cheaters are caught every day.

The U.S. Navy estimates that each illicit drug user costs his/her employer $6600 per year in lost productivity, workers comp claims, pilferage and health care costs. Yours may not be that high. Or it might.
